Tzedek has been working towards the elimination of global poverty for twenty years. Over this same time scale we have received increasingly dire warnings from the international scientific community that our environment is changing and that our current way of life is not sustainable.
Whether it is in the context of global resource allocation or bearing the brunt of climate change, those in poverty will suffer the most when it comes to environmental hardships. These threats pose a direct challenge to the eradication of poverty.
Recognising that all of us have an impact on the environment, and therefore have the ability to control and minimise our actions, Tzedek has adopted a range of policies and practices that will help us manage our own impacts while encouraging further action within the community. These policies include:
-
Measuring, managing and disclosing of our organisational carbon footprint, including the emissions related to volunteer activities
-
Reducing our absolute carbon footprint by 10% in 2010 in accordance with our joining the 10:10 campaign
-
Becoming a 'zero waste' charity
-
Developing a network of local sustainable procurement partners
-
Promoting vegetarian food at Tzedek events
