The Jewish Global Citizenship project

Education is at the heart of Tzedek's work. We seek to raise awareness, knowledge and understanding of development issues amongst British Jews. Through education we aspire to influence the behaviours and choices of individuals and organisations across all sectors of the Jewish community.

Tzedek’s educational programmes are founded on the principle that we have a responsibility to support our fellow human beings to live lives free from the burden of poverty, listening to their needs and supporting them to help themselves.

The Jewish Global Citizenship Project works with young people in Jewish schools, youth movements and chederim (religion schools), providing free educational resources, lesson plans and activity ideas on a wide range of international development topics such as poverty reduction and fairtrade.

Background

The Jewish Global Citizenship Project (JGCP) was created in 2007 following a 3 year grant from the Department for International Development and Pears Foundation.

JGCP is a unique and exciting education resource. The first of its kind, the project aims to embed the teaching of social justice issues and development education from a Jewish perspective in Jewish schools, synagogues and youth movements.

The JGCP is cross communal and has received positive feedback from across the community and beyond and through a commissioned piece of independent evaluation in 2009.

The JGCP has developed over eleven educational resource packs for use in Jewish schools, youth movements and chederim. Resources include "Sukkot and the Home", "Human Rights and the Ten Commandments", and "Trade Education". It has also launched a twinning project between schools in Ghana and the UK as well as an interactive theatre workshop on sustainable living.

The JGCP will expand its reach and impact between 2010-13 thanks to ongoing support from the Pears Foundation, Shoresh Charitable Trust, The Rayne Foundation, the Jewish Youth Fund and individual supporters.
