Social Action & You!

Kids from Champe VillageStudents & Social Action go together like smoked salmon & cream cheese - they’re perfect for each other! And there are a million different ways to engage in social action through Tzedek!

Get a few friends together, take a look at these fantastic ideas, and let Tzedek know how you’re getting on. We’re here to lend you a helping hand no matter where you are in the UK.

Fairtrade Campaign

If you think Fairtrade is a ‘must-do’ rather than a ‘should-do’, how about organising one of the following with your J-Soc:

  • Fairtrade Booze for Jews: Hold a Fairtrade wine tasting evening. You can pick up Fairtrade wine from most supermarkets and off-licences. And if you can’t find any, ask the shopkeeper why they don’t stock any.
  • Fairtrade Bagel Brunch: Invite your J-Soc members to a bagel brunch and serve Fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar, fruit and chocolate! Explore Jewish texts and sources which relate to ethical buying
  • Film night: How about showing a film about Fairtrade. Perhaps the compelling Black Gold (2005) or The Fair-Trade (2007). And why not finish the evening with a debate about the themes of the film and what action you can take to promote Fairtrade together
  • Fairtrade Football: Organise an inter-J-Soc football match using only Fairtrade footballs (available from The Co-operative or www.fairdealtrading.com). Or why not organise an inter-faith match with other religious societies at your university?
  • Fairtrade Cookbook: Produce a Fairtrade cookery book to sell at your university. Use recipes online including those from Divine Chocolate. You could split the money raised between a Tzedek and your J-Soc.

Find out more about Fairtrade form the Fairtrade Foundation website

But, this is just the start! Fairtrade Fortnight is taking place between 23 Feb and 8 March. This is an ideal time to plan Fairtrade activities at your university and through your J-soc. Contact your local/student newspaper for added publicity!

If you would like to host a 'Beer and Chocolate Tasting' session with two members of the Fairtrade campaign, contact the Fairtrade Campaign Coordinator, Poppy.

Friday Nights

Fancy a J-Soc Friday night dinner with a difference? Tzedek is putting on a series of themed Friday night dinners to raise awareness about the work that we do, the ethics of volunteering and the opportunities we have for you to get involved.

We’ll provide an enthusiastic speaker, give you a contribution towards the food/drinks, and all we ask is you come along and bring your friends!

If you’re interested in hosting a Tzedek Friday, please get in touch with Katie or call 020 7443 5123.

Put on a Tzedek event

  • Curry Night: Join up with an Indian culture society to put on a kosher/veggie curry night. Is there a Bollywood dance group that could perform? Or a film society that could choose a Bollywood film to show? Maybe there’s a cooking/food society that could help design a recipe book for all diners to take home?
  • World Music Night: Why not put on a world music band from Africa or India to raise some money for people living in poverty.
