Mildred the Mosquito
Charlotte and I (Maryam) are Faith Fellows who have been placed with Tzedek for the next 10 months. So we are going to use this blog to keep you guys up to date with all our adventures so watch this space!
We arrived last week at Tzedek to be greeted by Mildred the Mosquito peering down at us. She has remained on the wall at Tzedek since the Faith Fellows of 2009 were here. We began with meetings, getting to know the place and researching projects. Since then time has flown by, and it seems like we have been here forever!
Tzedek is part of the JHub office so we are surrounded by all different Jewish charities, and people from all sorts of backgrounds. We have already learnt so much about the Jewish faith and about the work of different charities, it’s a great environment to work in and develop our interfaith projects.
Yesterday we had a ‘Jewish lesson‘ from the delightful Ruth, pictured below, where we got to know a little bit more about the Jewish community and faith and today we learnt that every 7-10 years an extra month is added. Its been great to learn more about each faiths and discuss the similarities and differences on many issues.
On Wednesday we met with the Global Poverty Project team (pictured below with myself (Charlotte), Maryam and Leah). It was a really interesting meeting and great to hear how successful they have been in engaging people with development issues. We hope that we can learn from their example and create engaging presentations, to inspire people in different faith communities to action towards the MDGs.
We are buzzing with ideas for events and projects, from an Interfaith Festival, a interfaith charity auction, a sponsored Fire walk, even to breaking the Guinness World Book of Records for the biggest interfaith handshake which was inspired by this!
We are both really excited about the year ahead and enjoying all the quirky going ons at Tzedek (see photos below for examples)!
We will leave you with some food for thought
