AFPDE (Association des Femmes pour la Promotion et le Developpement Endogene)

Micro-credit Project In Support of Women Survivors of Sexual Violence

Aim: Works with women who have been raped, to restore their dignity and address their physical, moral and psychological wounds. To help them be rehabilitated in the view of society and so they can survive sustainably and independently, through income generating activities.

Background : As victims of rape many women face difficult situations everyday. Sexually abused women are usually repudiated by their husbands and become undesirable for their families. Without having access to health services and not having a predominant role in society they are condemned to poverty.

This project will give 60 women, a micro-credit for income generating activities, repayable over 7 months together.

The Programme:  This project will provide micro-credits to raped women living in poverty, in order to help them develop some income generating activities. At the end of the credit period, the beneficiaries will reimburse the capital with a small interest. The capital will refund another group of beneficiaries for the next period.

Partners: AFPDE has been working with women’s self help and rape survivor rehabilitation groups since 1999. The organisation has established good links with the local community, at least 20 other organisations that form part of a collaborative network of women’s organisations in the areas in which it works as well as government agencies.

Funds Required: £6,000 granted over two years
