Digambarpur Angikar
Rehabilitation of Women & Girls rescued from trafficking and victims of Domestic Violence.
Aim: To train 80 rescued women and girls in soft toy making, tailoring and in agriculture/animal husbandry.
Background: DA has been working in the field of women’s rights and anti trafficking campaigning for the last 6 years. During these years they have come across several cases of violence against women, women who have been trafficked or submitted to forced/fake marriage. In cases where these women have been rescued, not only have they faced rejection from their communities but extremely difficult economic situations, becoming very vulnerable. So they have immediate need of socio economic empowerment and poverty alleviation.
The programme: The aim of the project is to rehabilitate 80 women and girls within 2 years. During this period DA is developing different activities. Firstly, they are providing life skill education, through which the women will gain psychological recovery from trauma.
Secondly, the women will be equipped with useful information and tools to raise awareness about trafficking in their communities. They will also learn how to cope with stressful situations, decision making, problem solving, creative thinking, and effective communication.
The third component of the project is to provide vocational training in soft toys, agriculture and animal husbandry, which will give them economic empowerment to face their difficulties and overcome poverty.
Finally, DA will help the women to get organized in Self-help groups and they will be linked to the existing clusters of micro finance income earning and livelihood development. These clusters exist as a result of a previous project funded by Tzedek.
Partners: Digambarpur Angikar has been a Tzedek partner since 2008.
They have been working for 12 years or more under various initiatives for promotion and protection of women rights, mobilising people and opinion, providing varied vocational training, and, in the process, helping form and supporting a large number of women’s self help groups.
They have had support from various Indian organisations at the state and national level and international support from Action Aid (UK), Indo-Global Social Service Society (Germany) and the Smile Foundation (USA).
Outcome: This project will give women and girls rescued from traffic a chance to gain life skills. There will be an opportunity for them to train to enable them to undertake income generation activities and improve their livelihoods. Finally, through self help groups, they will get access to micro finance for their income generation activities, and at the same time they get support from other women that have lived through similar experiences.
Evaluation: DA along with members of the community will monitor the programme monthly. The group leaders of the target women and girls groups and community leaders will be involved in monthly implementation monitoring meetings to assess the progress and ensure community support to reach the target goals. Finally, Tzedek receives six monthly reports outlining progress and issues encountered.
Funding Required: The project has a cost of £2.550over one year.
