Grameena Vikasa Seva Sangham (GVSS)

 
Vocational training for women in income generating activities.
 
Aim: Training 30 women in bamboo basket making, broom making, and wire bag knitting. GVSS will provide 3 hours training per day for 1 month and initial raw materials (approx 3 months worth).
 
Background: The target group belongs to the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and weaker sections of 3 villages of Yerraguntla Mandal of Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, India. These people live below the poverty line, and do not have access to education and therefore illiteracy is common in the area. Mainly, they are agriculture labourers fully dependent upon the landlords and wealthy people.
Due to severe droughts in the area in the last years, their socio economic situation has worsened and in many cases they do not have any means of livelihood.
 
The programme: GVSS has identified 30 very poor families in the area who will be the beneficiaries of this project. The 30 women will be receiving training in broom making, basket making and wire bag knitting. Additionally, they will be part of an Awareness Generation Programme to enhance their self –respect, decision making, legal awareness, etc.
 
In order to guarantee sustainability of the project, some money will be collected from each beneficiary per month, so the next round can be funded.
 
Partners: Grameena Vikasa Seva Sangham” was established in 2003 by social workers in the area. The organization has taken part in various social service activities since its beginning such as:  Health, Sanitary, Educational, Vocational, Agricultural, Environment, Income Generation and many other activities including training, counselling, advocacy and relevant services for the capacity building of the target people.
They have worked with other international organizations such as the Associated Country Women of the World who funded a project for the empowerment of poor women and the Ontario Teachers Federation who supported a project for poor children in the area.
 
Outcome:
The project will provide the women involved with permanent employment opportunities and an assured source of income. It will promote the organization of women and their self-development.
Additionally, by supporting their livelihoods they will develop self-confidence and reassurance.
 
Evaluation: GVSS will monitor the project regularly with collaboration from staff and beneficiaries. They will hold monthly meetings to review the project and additionally, they will send reports to Tzedek every six months.
 
Funding Required: The project has a cost of £2.232 over 1 year.
