How to apply for funding from Tzedek
Thank you for considering applying for a grant from Tzedek. We look forward to building a relationship with you. Before applying, please read about the kind of projects we fund and our partner policy. You can also look at examples of current projects we fund in the current projects section. PLEASE NOTE that we no longer consider applications from UK NGOs, but only directly from grassroots groups in the developing world.
Step 1: Submitting a Letter of Inquiry and Project Summary Form
The purpose of this stage of the process is to get a brief idea of what you want to do so that we can understand more about each other, check that your work is likely to meet our mission and make sure it will not be a waste of your time to fill out a full application.
Please submit a brief letter of inquiry, NO MORE THAN TWO PAGES LONG (minimum size 11 text, with reasonable margins), to include the following information:
- The aims or goals of your project
- What activities you want to do
- How the community have been involved in planning so far and how they will be involved in the running of the project
- How the project is sustainable (will the beneficiaries be self-sufficient afterwards? will the project be able to continue or expand without more funds?)
- An estimate of the budget and whether you want to ask Tzedek for part or the whole amount
- What you expect to achieve by the end of your project
- The benefit you expect the average beneficiary to get by the end of the project, in comparison to their current situation
- The background of your organisation or group including 1. who set it up and whether they are from the local community, 2. how you are run and whether staff are from the local community, 3. previous work you've done, especially in the same area as this project, 4. your annual turnover (last year's budget) 5. past funders and size of grants
- How you found out about the problem in your community that you want to address, and how your project addresses it
- How you will monitor whether your project is being successful
In addition please fill in the Project Summary Form
Send these two documents (letter of inquiry and project summary form) to projects@tzedek.org.uk . ONLY if you cannot access email send to Tzedek, 152 West End Lane, London, NW6 1SD, United Kingdom - we greatly encourage you NOT to send applications by post.
Letters of Inquiry are reviewed three times a year by Tzedek's Overseas Projects' Team (OPT) - in January, May and September. We will respond within one month of these meetings to let you know whether we want to receive a full application from you and give constructive feedback.
Step 2: Application form
The purpose of this stage of the process is for you to tell us in detail about your project and how Tzedek can support you.
If your letter of inquiry is successful we will send you an application form. We will assign a member of the Overseas Projects Team to guide you through the process. Your contact person will liaise with you and give you advice on filling in and submitting the application form. The time from submitting an application form to hearing a final decision could be up to three months.
We consider funding applications three times a year - in February, July and November.
Step 3: Review Process
The purpose of this stage of the process is for the Overseas Projects Team to recommend application to the Executive Board for funding.
Once the form is submitted it will be reviewed by the Overseas Projects Team three times a year, as mentioned above. We will probably come back to the applicant with some final questions before making recommendations to the Executive Board. In the unusual situation that a large number of clarifications are required the application may have to be considered again at the next grant-making meeting.
Once the Overseas Projects Team has made recommendations to the Executive Board a final decision is made. The Executive Board consists of Tzedek’s Trustees and Team Leads. We will therefore contact you within 6 weeks of the grant-making meetings to tell you whether your application has been successful or not.
If your application is successful, we will make arrangements to transfer funds to your project. If your application is not successful, we will explain to you why. For example, it may be that we do not have sufficient funds at the time, or that we do not feel your programme adequately meets our criteria. If you want to submit a new application you will have to send a new letter of inquiry (step 1).
Step 4: Reporting
The purpose of this stage of the process is to ensure that the project is running smoothly and that any issues arising are being tackled. We hope this will help Tzedek improve its grant making in future and help you deliver your goals more effectively.
We will ask you to complete a baseline study at the beginning of the project and then a Project Report Form every six months, at the end of the project and at specific time points after the project ends (for example after 1 year). The reporting will be against the specific goals you are seeking to achieve, and release of subsequent funds will depend on it.
