CDRW (Centre for the Development of Rural Women)

Training tribal girls in embroidery and tailoring

Aim: Providing excellent quality training to tribal girls for income generation in Tamil Nadu

Background: CDRW (Centre for the Development of Rural Women) was started by a group of like-minded, committed young women from rural areas. They promote development by building the capacity of local organisations in the most disadvantaged villages of Uthangarai Block of Krishnagiri District, Tamil Nadu. CDRW has been running a tailoring training centre for five years and all 175 girls are currently earning. Tzedek’s grant will renew their equipment and allow them to expand from dalit (“untouchable”) girls to tribal girls outside the caste system.

Programme: 40 tribal girls in Pudur Nadu hills will be trained for one year intensively in tailoring and embroidery. Preliminary motivational seminars will help the girls realize their potential and have confidence in themselves. At the end of the year they will take a technical qualification which will enable them to access bank loans to set up income generating businesses or be employed by others.

Partners: CDRW is a member of an NGO network and partners with a similar organisation called Peace Trust. They have received one previous international grant from The Norwegian Human Rights Fund.

Outcome: 40 tribal girls will have an income potential of over £2/day after the year’s training.

Evaluation:  CDRW staff will closely monitor the day to day running of the project and conduct evaluation of the motivational seminar and the training. Tzedek will be provided with reports and photographs. In their first six month evaluation, CDRW reports that the girls have learnt how to sew and embroider various garments. Their self-confidence has increased and they are already earning approximately 70p/day whilst studying at the training centre.
