About the Overseas Programme

Each year Tzedek sends a group of volunteers to gain first-hand experience of overseas development in some of the world's poorest communities. This website has been created by former volunteers to answer the many questions that are asked by prospective volunteers about Tzedek's overseas programmes. We hope you find it useful ... if your questions are not answered, please feel free to contact us for more information. Applications for our Summer 2008 volunteer programmes are now open!

WHO?

Most Tzedek volunteers are students aged between 20-30, with little or no previous experience of working in developing countries. However, not all Tzedek volunteers are students and Tzedek welcomes applications from all ages and walks of life, from retired professionals to gap year students to career changers.

WHEN?

The programmes begin in early July and run for two full months, until the end of August. If you cannot make these dates, please let us know as there are many ways you can make a volunteering contribution to Tzedek throughout the year.

WHAT?

Volunteers are placed at host organisations for up to eight weeks, working with NGO local staff, learning about and contributing to ongoing development projects.

HOW?

Each group of volunteers is given a thorough pre-departure orientation by former volunteers in London. Upon arrival they are met by a volunteer coordinator who will give a local induction and find placements for each volunteer.

WHY?

To fulfill the Jewish obligation of tikun olam (healing the world), providing a clear ohr la'goyim (light unto the nations) about everyone's right to Tzedek (justice). Visit the FAQs page for more information about how Jewish values underlie Tzedek's work.
